Initial Idea
My idea is to create a magazine that is focused on the
theatre industry however, heavily covers the music within the industry. It will cover the development of music, how
the music is made, what genres are used where and why this is so. I want my magazines to be bold and dramatic
to suit the industry that my magazine will be covering however, I don’t want it
to look cheap and tacking so I want it to be simplistic as points but to use
rich and powerful conventions.

exceptions, most of the magazines above are aimed at middle aged women due to
the tone and context of these particular magazines. Although they publish many hard copies of

UK. They claim to appeal to one in four
UK women and one in five uk adults through their portfolio of 19 magazine and
26 websites.
Hearst Rodale

and Rodale International (http://www.rodaleinc.com/international) in the United States and publishes
three market leading magazines.
Their
magazines range a lot in target audience however, the average price of their
magazines would be fairly average due to the fact that they are still good
quality but aren’t aimed for an upper class audience.

Bauer Media
clearly has a broad range of magazine and do already have some that specialise
in music. One example of this is Kerrang
who appeal to a rock audience which is the complete opposite to the audience I
intend to appeal to.
Bauer does
have a lot of customers however, claiming that Bauer Media UK reaches over 22
million consumers every week but also claim that they sell to a world-class and
to a very wide audience which is clear when looking at the magazines they
publish.
While the amount of people having time to read magazines are
increasing, with 85% of the populations claiming to read a magazine, the way
they are carrying out this activity has changed. Many magazines have now resorted in
publishing their magazines online; and if not allowing certain information from
their magazine to be available on the internet.
It is clear to see why people are buying more magazines are
there are 3,200 different consumer titles
compared to 30 years ago when there were only 1,383. There is simply more choice to fit a greater
audience which is why With prices, articles and structures being more diverse,
there are 1.4 billion magazines sold a
year.
Magazines aren’t cheap though as advertises spent £745
million in 2008 while consumers spend approximately £2 billion on buying their
magazines. Magazines can soon go bust
with only 3 in ten surviving more than 4 years in the industry but this isn’t
surprising when you look at the fact that in the last decade, there have been
500 new magazines released every year.
Font Mood Board
All the fonts that I put on my mood board had to be
flamboyant to match the personality of my target audience as well as looking
professional to allow people to take my magazine seriously.
I chose to put Charlemagne STD on my mood bored as it was a bold font that was
very certain with its lines. The
expansion of the font at the end of each line shows an element of elegance and
maturity.
The French Script font is much more feminine with the curved lines and pure elegance of the writing. It looks like an old font which would attract my mature minded audience while it also enhances the traditional side of the theatre.
Trajan Pro is a thinner font however, does give off the impression of sophistication and certainty which give off the impression that my magazine would be very professional and giving reliable information.
Vijaya also has a feminine look about it as it is tilted on the side which may come across as a quirkiness and hipster feel to my magazine while the curls of the lettering adds a spark of sophistication and elegance.
Juice ICT would appeal to a teenage audience as it looks fun and exciting which would encourage people to purchase my magazine. With the vertical stretch of it, this font fits the target audience well as it doesn’t come across as too serious or grown up.
Sylfaen would be good for cover lines as it is a bold font and is very simplistic however, has a curved element which would attract females as it looks ‘pretty’ which the simplistic writing wouldn’t scare anyone with the fear of the magazine being too information packed.
The Monotype Corsive font is very theatrical and would be good for a master head as it is bold with many curves and much elegance which would attract a female audience with the taste of over the top-ness which is what the theatre and musical industry is all about.Nueva Std would be good for cover lines as I don’t think it is bold enough to be the master head however, it does have the quirkiness and would be appealing to entice people to read.

Colour Mood Board
This mood bored is to represent the colours that I intend on
using on my magazine. I got these
colours from my questionnaire results where people had the option to pick 3-4
colours they are attracted to out of these:
White
Red
Black
Pink
Turquoise
Purple
Dark Blue
Orange
Yellow
Lime
A magazine usually has 4-5 colours on the front page so I picked the 5 most popular to put on my mood board which you can see are:
White
Red
Black
Pink
Turquoise
The colours together have a very feminine look which is appropriate to my audience as I aim to entice a more female audience to my magazine.
Red is on my mood board and would have been highly chosen as it is the colour of passion, desire, and love. My audience would typically be very passionate about dance and theatre and many pieces of theatre is based on love, passion and desire which is why red would be so appealing. Red brings text and images to the foreground which is why it would be perfect for a magazine because it would be highlighted compared to other magazines on a shop shelf.

The colour
black is associated with Power, Elegance, Strength and Sophistication which is
right up my audience’s street because power, elegance and strength is what
dance is all about and what they would aspire to be which is why my magazine
would be seen to be the answer to their dream.
The Sophistication side of black would high light the quality of my
magazine which would encourage people to buy it because my magazine is aimed at
old teenagers and image is very important to that age group.
The colour that people voted for most was white and
this may be why, the colour white can
represent a successful beginning which is why late teenagers may be attracted
to it as they would want to succeed in life and would be attracted to a colour
that makes them feel this. White is a
pure and professional colour which, contrasting with black, would create a
sleek, professional front cover.
The colour purple is associated with royalty,
nobility, luxury, and ambition which would be attractive to someone who wants
to work in the theatre industry as they would have those ambitions in live with
the ambition of the colour creating and enhancing this. Purple is a feminine colour which would
attract a female audience while using a deep shade of purple will create
maturity and serious-ness.
The colour pink is sweet, nice,
playful, cute, romantic and charming which create a welcoming theme to the
magazine; it would appeal to people as they would feel positively about it and
would want to read more to get that charmed feeling. Pink is the ultimate female colour which can
make girls feel part of something as it would bring common interests together.
The colour turquoise is seen to be
refreshing, feminine, calming, sophisticated, energy, wisdom which would be
appealing to young ladies as this is what they would inspire to be. The energy
and wisdom that turquoise can represent would be very attractive to someone who
wants to go in to performance as those together would create success.
Audience Mood Board
At the top left of this mood board, you can see a picture of
Andrew Lloyd Webber. He is placed on my
mood bored as he is an iconic person within the theatre industry and my target
audience would probably inspire to be in one of his musicals. As well as Andrew Lloyd Webber being an idol
to my audience, there are also pictures of William Shakespeare and Marilyn
Monroe. I chose these people because
they are so well known in theatre and TV and they come from different times and
genres of theatre which shows that I want my target audience to be diverse,
open minded people that explore different creative beings. I have food on my mood board however, thought
carefully about what my target audience would be interested in, eventually I
came to the conclusion that they would want quick food because their students
who stereotypically don’t want to cook however, they would want to eat healthy
as many of them would want to keep fit to dance and act successfully. I intend to have the majority of my audience
to be female which explains why image would be important to my audience and why
there are hair and make-up products on my mood board. To my audience, theatre, music and dance
would be a passion so going to the theatre regularly would be a norm to them
which is why there is a picture of the theatre as well as many musicals being
on the bored board (Such as; Chicago, Hairspray, Annie, Wicked and We Will Rock You). There are two perfume bottles on the screen
however, I chose these ones because they are expensive and would only be worn
on special occasions because I see my audience as being comfortable with their
money and sociable leading to plenty of outings. My magazine is aimed at people would are
interested in the city life and thrive on being around people which is why
there is a London bus and a picture of London on my mood bored. I have reality programmes, such as the
XFactor and Strictly Come Dancing, as they are both based on arts and this is
why my audience would be interested in.

Advert Mood Board
This mood board represents the companies that may want to
advertise within my magazine. They are
based on the fact that my magazine will be about the musical industry and has a
female target audience with an age range of late teenagers. My target audience would clearly have to be
interested in theatre and may be in the theatre industry themselves. When choosing my advertisers I thought about
the life a typical reader would live and what they would be interested in. This led me to choose companies that are to
do with technology eg. Sony, Canon. They
would be interested in technology because they are young and growing up in an
age where technology dominates our living. Another aspect that older teenagers cannot
avoid is social media which is why Twitter and Facebook are suitable to
advertise in my magazine. Due to the
fact that my magazine is aimed at people that are interested in the theatre, you
can also see on my mood bored that theatre companies are there such as: Shake
the Dust, National Theatre, SYCO and Inside out. Brands are also displayed
based on readers travelling to theatres and other events, this is displayed by
a Travel Lodge logo as well as ticketmaster, the underground and Virgin. Being a magazine that is aimed at a female
audience, clothing shops would take a
massive part in the readers life which is why shops, such as Newlook, Jack Wills, ZARA and Missguided, are
displayed on my mood bored. I chose
these shops in particular as they are found on the high street and my magazine
is aimed at girls who come from a middle-class family so they are very
fashionable shops but not at huge prices.
As well as clothes being a factor in my readers live’s, accessories, jewellery,
and luxurious products would also be a factor as they would feel the need to
dress smartly when attending the theatre which is why bands such as Pandora,
Calvin Klein and Ted Baker are seen on this mood board. My readers would mostly be students which is
why fast food is very convenient for them while studying. This is why brands such as, Subway and SpudULike are on my mood board
(these are healthier options as someone in the theatre industry is usually
conscious about their health).
